Mobile technology is the term used to describe the advanced technology
that we have available to us in modern day. It mostly refers to the use of handheld,
portable devices that are used by millions of people around the world on a
daily basis for a variety of reasons. Even though mobile technology is highly
beneficial to everyone daily, there are some negative effects such as decreased
social development and many accidents caused due to distraction. Mobile technology is becoming a problem for teachers as many people are wondering whether or not teachers will be replaced by mobile technology. (Quillen, 2012) states, "The highly charged response reflects the fear many teachers are beginning to feel that technology could push them out of their jobs, especially in an era of persistently tight budgets." It is important to be critical seeing as though this quotation is from the United States, so this could be different for the UK.

ReplyDeleteI agree that mobile technology has become very beneficial in our lives. Presently, humans depend on mobile technology, from helping us to wake up in the mornings to helping us find directions to an unfamiliar place. In addition, I also agree with the quoted statement. Technology is slowly beginning to dominate the educational world, so teachers could possibly be replaced by it and therefore this could have a substantial effect on higher education institutions where there could be a lower demand for teaching courses. As you have stated, the journal article is that of an American origin, and as technology is continuously changing and developing over the world, I personally think the teaching profession within the United Kingdom could possibly be replaced by the world of mobile technology.
ReplyDeleteI agree, because mobile technology has more or less taken over the world in good and bad ways. This is because more people are finding mobile technology as a necessity rather than a privilege to have. I think that technology can be beneficial because it can allow learning and communicating in many forms that is fun. But it's their social and emotional development that suffers because these 'simpler' technology are used in such excessive amounts that people don't have time to do anything else. For example, children are now trading in outdoor play with friends for computer games.
ReplyDeleteAs for the future of teachers, I agree with Kinash et al (2012)'statement of partly why mobile technology is increasingly being used in education, "Increased affordability and functionality have been highlighted as partly explaining the attractiveness of mobile devices in education." This could impact on the decisions to employ teachers in the future because if mobile technology is becoming easier to access and can teach children in similar ways then teachers could be regarded as not required any longer.

ReplyDeleteI agree with Sara, even though mobile technology is highly beneficial to everybody's lives, children are missing out on playing outside with friends, etc. There are some disadvantages to mobile technology, there are so many benefits. Mobile technology is becoming very popular in a school day, but I still believe technology shouldn't replace teachers. Personally I think it is good to have a teacher so they can control a class and discipline children if need be. Trucano (2015) states, 'technology can play a vital role in providing access to educational resources and opportunities for learners that are otherwise unattainable. This is not to contend that students will, if simply 'left to their own devices', be able to educate themselves to the same extent than if they had a capable teacher to help guide and support them'. This quote shows that teachers will always be needed as children still need the support and guidance to learn.
